Description
This is a wasp nest I came across in the local dog park in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It was built precariously on a thin branch of a juvenile tree.
Unlike honey bees, wasps have no wax producing glands, and instead, create a paper-like substance primarily from wood pulp. Wood fibers are gathered locally from weathered wood, softened by chewing and mixing with saliva. The kind of timber used varies from one species to another, and depends on the location. This particular nest is constructed predominantly from paper pulp gathered from within the park, and this accounts for the distinctive colour of the nest. The pulp is also used within the nest to make combs with cells for brood rearing.
